Karen L. Smith, MFT - Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Los Gatos, San Jose, South Bay Area, CaliforniaAbout Me

I hold a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, in Palo Alto, California and a Bachelor's degree in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a manager and supervisor in the electronics field and as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. I am certified in hypnotherapy and EMDR, level one. I have over ten years of experience working with children, adolescents, families and individuals. I teach parent education and coach parents on new, positive ways to relate to their children. My work with women includes helping them through life transitions such as family changes, ending or beginning relationships, career transitions, and positive aging. My personal experiences as a business woman, daughter, mother, and grandmother enables me to understand and be empathetic to your experiences.

My Philosophy

I value and honor the diversity of my clients. Listening to my clients, being attentive, non-judgmental and present is of the utmost importance. My clients often comment that they appreciate my calm manner. Whether my client is a child, adolescent, couple or individual, I help them to achieve the goals that are most important to them.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process in which you and the therapist, in a safe and trusting environment, explore your issues and find ways to resolve them. The aim is to create a positive change so that you can experience all aspects of your life more fully. Psychotherapy can provide an opportunity to better and more deeply understand yourself and move on the path towards emotional well-being. Therapy is not always easy, but working through the challenges can be enlightening and filled with joy. It starts with a phone call.
